TPRS #6 Grammar Points
Grammar to note in box #6:
 en vez de –
In English, when we use the phrase “instead of,” we usually
pair it with an –ing form of the verb. But remember that in
Spanish, the –ando/-iendo form of the verb is used for the
progressive—with the verb phrase en vez de, you will use the
INFINITVE.
Ex: Yo caminé en vez de manejar.
Hoy es viernes, el 3 de abril.
CALIENTITO: For each blank write the bold verb in Spanish—you will
need to choose between preterite and imperfect. DO NOT write the
whole sentence, just the verbs for each sentence.
1. When I was (____) six years old, I had (____) a dog.
2. The students began (____) the quiz, but didn’t finish it (____) because
the fire alarm rang (____).
3. When I arrived (____) to the cafeteria, I saw (____) some students
lying on the floor.
4. I thought (____), “What’s going on?”

Grammar points:
 GUSTAR – Used in the imperfect gustaba when refering
to a like or predilection; used in the preterite gustó when
used to describe a like/dislike reaction to a particular thing.
 PONERSE – In this story, it means became. Because it
indicates a change in emotion, it is expressed in the
pretrite se puso
 QUERER – Use in the imperfect quería + INF when
referring to what someone wanted, but use in the preterite
quiso + INF when saying someone refused to do
something.
