• The preterite of -ar verbs In Spanish, the
endings of verbs identify both who is
performing the action (the subject) and when
it is being performed (the tense).
• Notice the accent marks on the endings -é
and -ó.
• The “nosotros” form is the same in the
present and preterite.
• You will need to look for other context clues
to tell which tense is intended.
El preterito = Past Tense
• To form the preterite (Past) tense of a
regular -ar verb, add the preterite endings
to the stem of the verb. Here are the
preterite forms of comprar:
(yo) compré
(tú) compraste
(Ud.)(él)(ella) compró
(nosotros) (nosotras) compramos
(vosotros) (vosotras) comprasteis
(Uds.) (ellos)(ellas) compraron
Regular–er/ir pret. verbs
• Regular -er and -ir verbs are similar to one
another in the preterite. Here are the preterite
forms of aprender and salir. Notice the accent
marks on the endings -í and -ió:
Aprender
aprendí
(nosotros) (nosotras) aprendimos
(tú) aprendiste
(vosotros/as)
aprendisteis
Ud. (ella)(él) aprendió Uds. (ellos) (ellas) aprendieron
• (yo)

Salir
