Linking verbs
• Linking verbs do not express action.
• Instead, they connect the subject of the verb to more
information about the subject.
• Examples of linking verbs: is, am, are, was, were, be,
being, been
Gunny is adorable and athletic.
** If you can substitute am, is or are and the sentence still
makes sense, you have a linking verb!
Team Practice
Examples:
1. Ms. Culp and Ms. Lemmons are math teachers.
2. Open House was hectic and exciting.
3. The basketball players were enthusiastic about the
championship game.
Teammate Practice
Directions: Read the following sentences. For each sentence
make the following annotations:
• Put an equal sign above each linking verb.
• Box the simple subject of each linking verb sentence.
• Underline the nouns and adjectives the provide additional
information about the subject.

Directions: Read the following passage from Chapter 1 of
Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief. As you read, identify as
many linking verbs, helping verbs, and action verbs as you
can by annotating your passage. Use the following code to
annotate your passage:
Action Verb = AV
HV
Linking Verb = LV
Helping Verb =
Example: Ellie may read her book at the park today.
Independent Practice
• Directions: Silently and independently work on the
independent practice.
• Above & Beyond: If you finish early, work on your
homework.
