Verb moods: the way the action or state of being is expressed.
 Indicative mood: the verb is used to state a fact or an opinion.
 Interrogative mood: the verb is used to ask a question.
 Conditional mood: the verb is used to make a statement about
what might happen if something else happens.
 Subjunctive mood: the verb is used to express a
recommendation, requirement, wish, or something contrary to
reality.
 Imperative mood: the verb is a part of a command or request.

• Clauses beginning with “that”:
• Use the 3rd person present tense plural form of the verb
• Which means?
• 3rd person: “they” “she” “he”
• Present tense: currently
• Plural form: goes with plural subject
• boy = singular, boys = plural
• jogs = singular, jog = plural
• Notice:
• plural nouns usually end in “s”
• singular verbs usually end in “s”
• THIS IS OPPOSITE!

• But what if I have a singular subject?
• Subjunctive: use plural anyway
• Use “they” to find the correct form
• I suggest that John stop making bad choices.
• John is singular
• “stop” is usually used with plurals
• Subjunctive: use plural anyway
• It is important that the boy think carefully.
• Boy is singular
• “think” is usually used with plurals
• Subjunctive: use plural anyway

• If any of your sentences have “that” in them,
cross out your verb and change it to the
subjunctive.
• If you have used the subjunctive correctly,
highlight it.
• Or, write a sentence with the word “that” and
use a subjunctive verb.
• You may consult with your classmates.
