What is an inference?
When you use clues from the story to
figure out something that the
author doesn't tell you.

Grammar: Passive Voice
ACTIVE VOICE:
The subject comes before the object
Farmers sell their produce at the market.
PASSIVE VOICE:
The object comes before the subject
Produce is sold by farmers at the market.
When do you use the passive voice?
•When you want to focus on the receiver of the
action
•Receiver is the part of the sentence that
receives the action
The water was polluted by harmful chemicals.

The passive is formed by be + past participle; and
sometimes (by + noun)
