In the reflexive construction,
the subject is also the object

The subject, the pronoun and
the verb are all in the same
form…

• ¿A qué hora te desayunas cada día?
• Mis hermanas se maquillan en su cuarto.
• Nosotros nos acostamos muy tarde.
• Pepito se baña en el baño.
Reflexive verbs are verbs that take on a specific kind of direct
object pronoun – a reflexive pronoun – which refers back to the
verb’s subject. In English, adding “myself,” “yourself,” etc. to a
sentence makes the verb reflexive. In the infinitive, reflexive
verbs appear with –se tacked on at the end.
Here are some common reflexive verbs:
despertarse (e-ie)
to wake up
levantarse
to get up
acostarse (o-ue)
to go to bed
dormirse (o-ue)
to fall asleep
ponerse
to put on
vestirse (e-i)
to get dressed
quitarse
to take off
sentarse (e-ie)
to sit
bañarse
to bath
lavarse
to wash (oneself)
limpiarse
to clean (oneself)
secarse
to dry off
peinarse
to comb
cepillarse
to brush
afeitarse
to shave
irse
to go away
divertirse (e-ie)
to have fun (enjoy oneself)
mirarse
to look at (oneself)

to stay/remain

to go for a walk
***While only some Spanish verbs can be reflexive, many
verbs also have non-reflexive forms; Consider the
following:
María lava el coche.
Maria washes the car.
María se lava las manos.
Maria washes her hands.
Yo pongo el libro en la mesa.
I put the book on the table.
Yo me pongo el vestido rojo.
I put on the red dress.
Mi papá mira la televisión.
My dad watches the TV.
Ana se mira en el espejo.
Ana looks at herself in the mirror.

3. Attached to an infinitive:
• Voy a acostarme ahora mismo.
• Luisa va a cepillarse os dientes.
