What do you like to do and don’t like to do?
Today’s Objective:
Be able to express likes in Spanish using verb GUSTAR and dislikes and phrases “me
gusta” and “no me gusta”….as well as to interview fellow students in the class and find
out what they like to do in their free time.
El Verbo “GUSTAR”
• En español gustar significa “to be pleasing”
• In English, the equivalent is “to like”
Understand when someone talks about activities they
like or dislike.
Por ejemplo:
• In English we say:
• En español decimos:
“I like Spanish.”
“To me, Spanish
is pleasing.”
Gustar

Gustar = to be pleasing

You will only use this verb in the 3rd person - gusta or
gustan.

You add pronouns to tell who it is pleasing to.
Me = to me
Nos = to us
Te = to you
Le = to him/her
Les = to them, you all
I like the beach.
Me gusta la playa
In English:

• “I” is the subject
• “Me” is the indirect object
• “like” is the verb
• “gusta” is the verb
• “the beach” is the
direct object

Gustar - to be
pleasing

Use GUSTA when the word after it is singular.

Use GUSTAN when the word after it is plural.

A mí me gusta el fútbol.


Soccer is pleasing to me/I like soccer
No me gustan los deportes.

Sports are not pleasing to me/I don’t like sports

To say that you like to do something: use GUSTA +

The word order is actually “backwards”:
• The indirect object comes first:
