Hooray you’re in Juniors!
In Year 3, we very much focus on moving
towards more independence. Life in Year 3
is quite different to being in Year 2 – there
is no Prize Planet or Explore Friday. You
will also lose your afternoon play!
But... we will still have fun activities and
have brilliant Learning Journeys.

Expectations:
In Year 3 the Home Learning focuses on maths,
reading and spellings. The children will be asked
to attend catch-up club if the work is not handed in
on time. It is expected that adult support will be
given, that a pencil is used and that writing is neat.
The children will have a home learning book to
complete Learning Journey project work in –
choosing from the menu before each term.
Reading
Regular reading is a crucial element to making
progress in all subjects. It is expected that your
child will read EVERYDAY and record this
themselves in their orange home learning book. To
reward regular reading at home the entries will be
counted up and if your child has read 20 or more
times in a calendar month they will win the
‘Reading Challenge’ and be entitled to different
treats!
Guided Reading:
Your child will bring home a book from their
Guided Reading session with me at least
once a week. This book should be kept in
their book bag to use throughout the week.
Each child will be allocated a number to
correspond with their book. They will also be
able to take home a book of their choice.
Staff from Lewes library have been in to talk to the children about this year’s
Reading Challenge – it’s a great way to keep your child engaged with reading over
the Summer holidays.
Times Tables Everyday
In Year 3, the children should be learning the 2, 3,
4, 5, 6, & 10 times tables with speed and
accuracy.
Once they are secure with these, they can move
on to learn the related division facts and then
begin to learn the 7, 8 & 9 times tables.
Spellings
Once a week, your child will be tested on their
current spelling from the lists. They should cover
and copy these spellings 3 more times
throughout the week. In class, we will use these
spellings as part of our handwriting practice, and
for specific spelling activities.
Holiday Home Learning
Over the Summer holidays, the children can
choose from the menu to complete tasks
related to our first Learning Journey – ‘The
Stone Age’.
PE Kits and PE days
Children should wear purple
shorts, a white t-shirt and
plimsolls for PE.
When it becomes colder they
may need tracksuit bottoms and
trainers for outside.
Behaviour Expectations and Rewards
Middle of the Sun certificates will be awarded on a daily basis, to children
who have shown excellent effort or attitude. Middle of the Star certificates
are awarded for excellent learning and there is also now the addition of the
Supernova, which the children receive a certificate for if they have been in
both the Learning Star and the Middle of the Sun.
We will award Stars of the Week certificates in our Friday celebration
assembly.
The grey cloud and the black cloud are used as behaviour sanctions. Children
on the grey cloud will miss 5 minutes of their playtime. Children on the black
cloud will go to another class with their work for 30 minutes.
Possible Trips
Lewes Castle Museum
Schools without Walls Stone Age Downs Trip
Lewes Town Survey
Herstmonceux Science Centre
These are often subsidised by the Friends of South Malling;
however we would not be able to go without a small parent
contribution and parent helpers.
Attendance
We aim for a minimum of 95%
attendance over the course of the year.
We encourage children to still attend if it
is a minor cold, however if your children
has been sick or had an upset stomach
there is a 48 hour policy.
