What is a cinquain?
• A cinquain is a five-line poem that
has special syllable counts.
• A cinquain poem has its own unique
format.
What is the layout?
Line 1: A one-word line, should be a noun.
This is your subject.
Line 2: Two adjectives about the subject.
Line 3: Three verbs that end in –ing that are
about the subject.
Line 4: Four words about a feeling of the
subject.
Line 5: One word synonym about subject.

A thesaurus…
…is a dictionary that gives alternate
words or synonyms.

But how do I use a thesaurus?
Using a thesaurus…in the
classroom.
1. Search for the word that you want
just like you would while using a
dictionary.
2. The alternative words will be listed.
Just take your pick!
3. You can also find a thesaurus online
at www.thesaurus.com

Now it’s time to make your
own Cinquain!
You will be making a
Valentine Cinquain to give to
someone for Valentine’s Day!
How to start:
1.
Use the correct from to start your
poem.
2. Use the thesaurus to create synonyms in
your poem!
3. Put the finishing touches on your
cinquain.
4. Neatly copy your cinquain onto the
Valentine paper and decorate it.
