Bread and Butter Skills –- Sentences
Learning Objectives:
to understand a simple sentence;
to understand when to use a simple sentence.
Charlie runs through the wood.
Sarah is at the top of the hill.
The horse jumps over the gate.
What do all of the words
underlined in these
sentences have in
common?
They’re all verbs (‘doing
words’). Every sentence
must have a verb. If you’re
unsure what a verb is,
check back over your ‘Bread
and Butter’ word classes.
Brush the pan with melted butter. Slice the
apples into chunks.
Add the apples to the pan.
The monkey jumped from tree to tree. It
flew through the air.
The monkey landed on a great big leaf.
I remember my first training session. It
was really hard. The
coach pushed us to the edge. My fitness
needed to improve.
These sentences
are included on
your worksheet.
Make all of the
verbs appear in
bold.
Once this is done,
underline the thing
doing the verb –
this is also called
the subject
Write three simple sentences for one of these:
a spooky story aimed at Year 3 pupils
explaining how to make toast
a young child's reading book
explaining how to cross the road safely
a young children's adventure story
explaining how to play a computer game
