Verb or verbal phrase that adds action to
the sentence
 Typically an –ing or –ed verb at the
beginning or end of a sentence
 Must be next to the noun it’s modifying
 If it is removed from the sentence, the
sentence still makes sense.

Participle
Longing for a single drop of water, Katniss
looks to the skies in hopes of help from
Haymitch.
 Peeta and Katniss, flaming with beauty,
easily take over the show.
 Depressed, Katniss remembers Prim back
at home.
 Caught in the net, Rue motions for Katniss
to draw near.

Examples of participles
Quietly, I realized my life would be forever
changed.
 As her anger rises, Katniss begins to kill.
 Emotionally, Katniss and Peeta share their
first kiss.


How can we change these sentences to
include a participle phrase?
Why are these not participles?
Two word combination that adds to the
action of a sentence
 noun + -ing or –ed verb

Absolute
Heart racing, I woke Katniss to tell her
about the tracker jackers.
 Wind rushing past my face, I looked
around for hidden explosives.
 Leg burning, I limp through the burning
forest.

Examples of absolutes
Stepping daintily over the grass, the dog
tries to avoid getting water on his paws.
 Glimmer, scared and excited, raced to
beat the other Careers.
 Her beautiful complexion, taunting
enough an angel would envy it, was now
concealed behind a mask of hardness.


How can we change these sentences to
include an absolute?
Why are these not absolutes?
Noun that adds a second image to a
preceding noun
 Expands the reader’s imagination
 Must be next to the noun it’s modifing.

Appositive
Walking towards the podium, Prim, a 12
year old girl, looks completely terrified.
 Rue, the tribute from District 11, swings
from tree to tree.
 Claudius Templesmith, a creature-like
being, sat perched on his mini-throne.
 Katniss, a hunter, had skills I never
dreamed of having.


I remember carrying a bag, brightly
colored, as I climbed through the muddy



How can we change these sentences to
include an appositive?
Why are these not appositives?
Amplify the details of an image
 Leave one adjective in its place and move
the others after the noun.



