AND
HELPFUL TIPS
WHEN TAKING EXAMINATIONS
1. On Skipping Test Items
Although most test questions are
arranged such that earlier questions are
more difficult to answer than later ones, it
is advisable to do easy ones first and go
back to harder questions later, if times
permits. Avoid wasting time puzzling over
hard questions.
2. On Guessing for the Answers
If you have to guess for the answer, be
sure to use an educated and reasonable
guess, since a random one can work
against you. Otherwise, it is not worthwhile
at all to guess.
3. On following Directions
Since most types of test are given under pressure, it is a
must that you read and understand thoroughly and
carefully every directions in each part in the examination.
This will help you save valuable time, besides the selfconfidence you will acquire when you know that you are
on the right tract.
Above all, keep your cool, stay calm and feel confident
that you are well prepared for the examination. Go over
your answers if time allows and stay on, until you are
asked to leave the examination room.

TIPS to Score high in English Test
A. On verb Forms
1.Remember that regular verbs (action
words) simply add -ed for their past and
past participle forms in their plain form.
Example:
They talked and cooked as they had
washed clothes.
2. However, irregular verbs changed their plain
form for their past and past participle form.
Example:
I am happy today but yesterday, I was sad.
The hens lay eggs. One laid an egg only last
week. Others have been laying eggs regularly.
Mother lies down for a nap. She lay down in a
papag yesterday where she has lain restfully for
an hour.

B. On Pronouns and their antecedents must
be near each other

4. In summer, father goes with Danny for his
fishing expedition. (wrong)
E. For Reading Comprehension Test:
1. Always determine the central idea of the selection you
read. This is expressed in the Topic Sentence, Which is
usually written in the first paragraph. This sentence helps
you tp know the answers to the questions that are asked
about the selection.
2. Learn to improve your reading speed. If you see
unfamiliar words in the paragraph, learn their meaning in
the way they are used in the selection.
3. Practice reading through thought units, not word for
word. This will enable you to get the meaning of the
selection fast and effectively.
F. On Verbal Analogy Test
1. Familiarize yourselves with the following
types of words relationships.

G. For Correct Usage and Grammar
1. Use singular verbs for: Either, neither, very,
everybody, no one, no body, each, everyone.
2. These pronouns are always singular and
need S-form of verb like doesn’t: she, he, it.
3. “To” is always followed by the infinitive form
of the verb: to live, to go, to choose.
4. For Punctuation Marks

H. For Vocabulary/Word Meaning Tests

Know the root /etymology/origin of the word.
phone means sound : telephone, megaphone
cede means to go : proceed, precede
thermo means heat : thermometer

Know the meaning of prefixes – syllable attached before root word
pro means forward : pro-life, procreate
ob-means against : obscene (against decency)

Know the meaning
ible/able means capable of: corruptible, (can be corrupted)
ate means the act of: Obfuscate (confuse)
ious/ful means full of: boastful (full of pride); fictitious (full of wrong)
