Definition
• Phrase:
oA group of words that functions
as a part of speech
oLacks a subject, verb, or both
Prepositional Phrases
• Consist of a preposition, a noun or pronoun (the
object of the preposition), and any words that
modify the object.
• Can function as an adjective:
o Each of the dancers won an award.
• Can function as an adverb:
o Kathy was nervous during her interview.

Appositive Phrases
• Appositive:
oA noun or pronoun that identifies
or renames another noun or
pronoun.
