Starfish
By Alice Quigley
Did you know that if you gently turn over a live
starfish, you’ll see it’s tube feet wriggling back at
you! (it looks like a wave!)
sea stars are beautiful animals that can be a variety
of colours, shapes and sizes, although all resemble a
star. While some appear smooth, they all have spines
covering their upper surface and a soft underside. 

Cool stuff…
 Although
they are named "starfish", they
are not related to fish at all. Starfish
belong to the group of marine invertebrates
which also include sea cucumber, sea
urchin and sand dollar.
Soooo many facts…….!
Did you know….

Their star-like shape is the reason why they are
named starfish or sea stars!

Sea stars with forty arms are called “sun stars”!

And did you know that Starfish vary in size. They
usually have five to ten inches in length and
weigh up to 11 pounds.


Another cool thing is they have the ability to
regenerate missing parts of their body if they get
half eaten!!! But it is not always fast to
regenerate… sometimes it may last up to a year!
Size:
 Crown

50 centimetres!

to 50 centimetres wide!
Gender:
did you know starfish have the ability to
change gender, whenever they like in their
lifetime!!!
That’s a great disguise!
Diet…
most sea stars eat on bivalves, such as..
Clams, mussels and oysters. Others eat
cucumbers, sea urchins, shrimp, tubeworms,
fish but they also eat algae and dead animals
from the sea floor.
That’s it for now…. Lets hope we see
some starfish at the rocky shore!
