 Present Perfect Form
 Have/Has + Past Participle
 Past Participle is usually the –ed form of
the verb except for irregular verbs
 Irregular Verb Forms
 Ex. play= has played run= have run
Present Perfect Form
 Yone has gotten up at sunrise every day
of her life.
 Jia has been engaged for 5 years.
 Vicki has taught ESL for the past 100
years!
Present Perfect Negatives
 Place NOT after the HAVE form.
 Ex. Vicki has NOT taught ESL for the
past 100 years.
Present Perfect Questions
 Yes/No Questions
 Move the HAVE form to the front of the
question.
 Ex. She has given Vicki her full attention!
 Has she given Vicki her full attention?

 Wh-Questions
 Drop the WH-question word in front of
the yes/no question form.
 Has she given Vicki her full attention?
 When has she given Vicki her full
attention?

 Perfect Aspect indicates some connection or
relationship to the present
 An activity happening now that began in the
past either continuous or periodic
 Ex. LiNa has been a wonderful student since he
began school. (continuous)
 Mahmooda has prayed every morning all her
life. (periodic)

 Present Perfect is often used with for
and since
 For- tells the length of the action
 Ex. Vicki has taught for 100 years.
 Since-tells when the action began
 Ex. She began teaching in 1909. She
has taught ESL since 1909.
More Present Perfect
 Use simple past with last week, month, year
 Use present perfect with THE past or last
week, month, year
 EX. Fauzia was absent last class.
 Gaizhi has been asleep for the last ten minutes
of class.
