Good work, for many of you in semester 1
Not such good work, for others.
Syllabus, for semester 2.
Please note that we have very little time
together (only one hour per week).
• It is extremely important to do all of the
assigned homework (all exercises, carefully
checked).
• It is also vitally important to review and
practice EVERY DAY!
English L&C 2
• We will try to make the lessons available on
the LLSH website (but this takes time), and
will not be very useful for this year (since the
lessons are ready only week-by-week).
• Basically, your book is your most important
resource for the course.
• What about prounciation of the new words?
– IPA transcriptions in the back of the book
– Merriam Webster website (all words are
pronounced)
English L&C 2
From "spot test"/ final test corrections (you will
get your paper back in the second part of the
lesson):
• MAJOR and serious problems with English
verb forms, almost all students. Why??
• problems with use of articles
• poor pronunciation of new words
• poor pronunciation of old words
• uncertain use of words (verbs to use with
nouns, prepositions, etc.)
English L&C 2
The UdS cannot make your English (magically)
improve.
We can give you help and suggestions.
The only way to improve your English, is to work
HARD on it, outside of class.
Class time (extremely limited) is simply to give you
feedback, and advice for improving.
The actual improvement must take place at home.
There will also be obligatory tutorial sessions every
week, for students with low grades in semester 1.
English L&C 2
Expertise (in sports, music, using
machinery, typing, etc.) requires about
10,000 hours of practice.
Learning a language, to a truly advanced
level, possibly 20,000 hours.
In one year there are …??
• …8760 hours (8784 in this "leap year" of
2008)
• fewer than 6000 hours, if you subtract the
time spent sleeping
English L&C 2
Language expertise: 20,000 hours.
2008 = fewer than 6000 waking hours
Please spend 1-2 hours practising the
new English words every day:
•
•
•
•
What do they mean?
How do they sound?
How do I use them?
How can I use them? (practice sentences,
practice situations)
English L&C 2
Final diagnostic tests: on "collocational
knowledge".
a collocation:
• group of words that are found together
repeatedly
• "set" (or fixed) expressions
• one of the most important principles of
the way words work (all languages)
• something we will work on this semester
English L&C 2
collocations:
• to do the ironing; to play hockey; to go skiing
• to go to + place; to live in + place
• I can't manage to + vb; I hate + ing
• a strong accent
• vitally important
• etc. etc. etc. (tens or maybe hundreds of
thousands of these for any language)
Stay tuned (lecture course on Friday mornings).
English L&C 2
Collex & Collmatch tests
• For those of you who didn't already take
these tests.
• Once you have finished, you will get your
results from semester 1, and instructions for
what to do about them!
We will begin our regular lessons next week.
Please come to class, having completed,
corrected, and practiced all of the assigned
lessons for week 2 (see syllabus).
