Using Quotes
Chapter 7
JOURN 1CP
Types of Quotations

Direct quote
-Uses a person’s exact words

Partial quote
-Selects key words from the speaker’s information
and inserts them into the reporter’s sentence

Indirect quote/paraphrase
-Reports approximately what the source said
without using his/her direct words
-Does not use quotation marks
Using Direct Quotes


Only use a quote if it conveys something that
can’t be communicated better in your own
words.
If it isn’t articulate, then a better strategy is
paraphrasing what the subject has told you.
What Makes a Good Direct Quote?

Use the quote if it is particularly articulate or
powerful in the wording.
–



Caution: most people do not speak in a way that
translates well into a quote.
If the quote is quirky or captures the source’s
personality
If it is emotional or highly opinionated
The subject is well known
–
The more significant the interviewee is, the more likely
a reader will be interested.
Quote Problems


Avoid rambling quotes
Avoid quotes with too much technical lingo
Editing Quotes



Never make up a quote.
Don’t add words to a quote.
Exception: You may “clean up” the grammar
if it is minimal and does not change the
context.
–
[Be sure to put the changed words in brackets]
Attribution

In most cases, the simple verb “said” is best
since it is neutral
–

Example: “This is a quote,” said Karie Lynch.
There are other verbs you can use, but be
conservative and avoid attributions that reveal
bias.
Identification in Attribution

Attribute with the title or position and name.
Ex. “This year’s textbooks are going to be more
expensive,” said ASG President Mary Smith ‘16.
*Include the graduation year the first time the
student’s full name is mentioned.
*Notice that the epithet comes before the person’s
name.
Where to Place Quotes and
Attributions


Quotes appear at the beginning of the
paragraph.
Attribution follows the quote.
Ex. “This year’s textbooks are going to be more
expensive,” said ASG president Mary Smith ‘16.
– If the quote is more than one sentence, the
attribution comes after the first sentence. The
second sentence follows and does not need
attribution.
Where to Place Quotes and
Attributions

Don’t stack quotes - Do not place two
people’s direct quotes next to each other
without a transition paragraph.
Punctuating Quotes
Rule #1
1.
Use quotation marks around words that are
quoted directly.
Ex. “I am very concerned about illegal student
parking,” said Principal Bill Black.
*Do not use quotes around the speaker’s name or
the attribution.
*Do not use quotes around a paraphrase.
Rule #2
2. Use punctuation to separate the speaker from his
words.
-Use a comma to separate a simple declarative
sentence from its attribution.
*Commas and periods ALWAYS go inside the quote
marks. *Remember that attribution follows the quote.
Ex. “I am determined to create order in the student
parking lot,” said Principal Bill Black. “Illegal parking
cannot continue at Tembrooke.”
Rule #2 cont.
2. Use punctuation to separate the speaker from his
words.
-Use a question mark or an exclamation mark only if
that mark is appropriate for the sense of the quotation.
*Question marks and exclamation marks go inside
quotes because you are factually reporting what the
speaker said.
Ex.
“Why do students park illegally?” asked Principal Bill
Black.
“We must intend to stop illegal parking NOW!” said
Black, slamming his fist onto his podium.
Directions: For each of the following exercises, identify if each sentence
uses a direct quotation or an indirect quotation and add correct
punctuation when needed.

2. He told me he studied authentic Italian cooking at Casa Ombuto in the
Tuscan countryside.
3. The twins, Molly and Max, asked at the same time,“Mom when can we
go to the park? ”
4. The tour guide announced the bus would depart promptly at noon.
5. “I became a doctor,” said Leigh, “because I wanted to help people. ”
6. “There is a foot hanging out that window,” she said in amazement.
“Where? I don't see it,” he replied.
8. Bart exclaimed, “ I did nothing wrong,” exclaimed Bart Simpson ‘18 as
they locked him in the prison cell.
9. Chrissy told Pat to meet her at the park for lunch.
10. Download the music onto a CD,”said Cheryl. “ We can listen to it while
