Warm Up: May 2, 2012
Life on Earth could not exist
without one thing.
1) What is it?
2) AND explain why life could not
exist without it.
 The student will be able to
explain the physical behavior
of the environment, Earth,
and the universe.
Sun and Season
Chapter 29 and 26(sec. 2)
The Sun
- our average middle-age yellow star contains
more than 99% of all the matter in the solar
system. (center of the solar system)
The Sun produces energy by the
nuclear fusion of hydrogen into
helium; this takes place in its core.
Sun produces
energy from
nuclear reactions
 holds all planets in orbit by its gravity
 provides almost all energy found on
Earth
 made of gas 70% hydrogen 29%
helium 1% other gases
 Distance from Earth = 93 million miles or
150 million kilometers.
The distance from Earth to the sun is called
an Astronomical Unit – (A.U.)
 it takes 8 minutes for light to travel this
distance.
 Diameter of the sun is 110 times the
diameter of the Earth.
Sun
Sun Flare
 Mass is 333,000 times greater than
Earth.
 Density = ¼ that of Earth – reason why sun
is less dense than the Earth is because it is a
ball of gas

Short video reviewing facts
about our “star” and new
information also. You may wish
to take notes.
Thank you to Science Teacher
Tony Goodyear
for help in creating this PPT.
