Independent & dependent
What is a clause?

A clause is a group of words that
contains both a subject and a verb.
Two Types of Clauses:
1.
An independent clause expresses a complete
thought and can stand alone as a sentence.
Also known as a main clause.
Example: We all want bargains.
Two Types of Clauses:
2. A dependent clause may contain a subject
and a verb, but it does not express a
complete thought. It cannot stand alone as
a sentence.
Also known as a subordinate clause.
Example: when we buy things

Compound Sentences


Contain two or more INDEPENDENT clauses
Joined together either with:
 A semicolon


I love pizza; my favorite is pepperoni.
A comma with a coordinating conjunction

I love pizza, and my favorite is pepperoni.
Semicolons ;

Can only be used to join independent clauses

Incorrect: The field trip to the park should be fun we are all
going to bring a game to play.

Correct: The field trip to the park should be fun; we are all
going to bring a game to play.





that signal the start of a dependent clause.
