Are You Ready for
This JELLY? Well Step
on Into the World
of PRETERITE!
-
Imperfect is Wack; Preterite is where it’s
At!
Regular Formation
 Drop the regular ending and add the following endings based on the
ending of the original verb:
 -ar verbs
-er/ir verbs
 é
amos
í
imos
 aste asteis
iste
isteis
 ó
aron
ió
ieron
 For example, take the verb comer in a sentence:
 She ate a lot of hamburgers at the party.
You would take off the –er ending off of comer and add the –er ending for
ella, él, and usted, to the stem of comer, since the subject of the
sentence is “she.” In a sentence it would look like:
Ella comió mucho hamburguesas al fiesta.
Example: I bought some new shoes. The verb is comprar:
Yo compré unos nuevos zapatos.
Now it Gets Harder!
In the Preterite, there are
also other exceptions.
 For verbs that end in –car, -gar, or –zar,
in the yo-form, they do a special little
trick!

original example
 In the preterite form, there are some special
verbs that change their stems in the preterite

i.

out.
 As you can see

the o changed to dormí
dormisteis
a u in the bottom dormiste
two forms.

When do we use this
preterite
 When talking about the past.
 A direct fixed point in time. When verbs
end in “ed”.
 The English equivalence is simple past,
fixed period of time, “ed”, had, has, and
have.
 We use it at a fixed point in time, a specific
number of times, or during an enclosed
amount of time.
How to use this preterite
 When I started speaking, they started
cheering.
 The above sentence needs the preterite
because there are verbs that end in “ed.”
 Cuando yo commencé hablar, ellos
commenzaron gritar.
 They went to the mall.
 The above sentence has an irregular
