These phrases can be sorted into two groups. Can you work
out which ones go together and what the groups are?

In the past
1. One of these texts is talking about the past and one about the
present. Which is which? How did you know?
2. How do the verbs show if it’s in the past or the present?

VERBS IN THE PAST
When you look up a verb in the dictionary,
it will end in either ER, IR or RE.
This means ‘to _______’, e.g. ‘to play’.
To talk about the past, you have to change the ending,
e.g. to play  played.
This is called the PAST PARTICIPLE.

Talking about the past
Change the verb in brackets to the past
participle. Look at your book for help!

brackets in French, then change it to the past.
