Saying what you think – expressing likes and dislikes.
Saying that you like something in Spanish is a bit different to other
verbs. Literally you are saying ‘it pleases you’, so the verb ending
is ‘a’ and not ‘o’!
gustar – to like
Odio* = I hate
me gusta = I like (1 thing)
Prefiero* = I prefer
me gustan = I like (more than one thing)
*these verbs act
like normal verbs
encantar – to love (works in the same way)
After any one of
these expressions
we always use the
word ‘the’,
el/la/los/las ...
me encanta = I love (1 thing)
me encantan = I love (more than one thing)
Examples:
It’s a really
good idea to
back up your
statement with a
reason ‘porque’,
me gusta el chocolate
me gustan los bonbones
prefiero el español
odio la ensalada
I like chocolate
I like sweets
I prefer Spanish
I hate salad
porque es delicioso/horrible – because it’s delicious/horrible
‘because...’
porque son deliciosos
– because they’re delicious
porque lo/la encuentro ....
– because I find it ....
porque los/las encuentro .... – because I find them
Es fenomenal
You can use these phrases with all tenses, e.g.
It’s great,
Va a ser fenomenal
porque me encanta ir a la playa
It’s going to be great,
because I love going to the beach
Fue fenomenal
It was great,
