SENTENCE TYPES
SIMPLE, COMPOUND, COMPLEX,
COMPOUND-COMPLEX
Subject
• The subject of a sentence is the
person, place, thing, or idea that
is doing or being something.
– dog, Ms. Brunson, Chili’s, my soul
Verb
• Verbs are a class of words used to
show the performance of
an action (do, throw, run),
existence (be), possession (have),
or state (know, love) of a subject. To
put it simply a verb shows what
something or someone does.
CLAUSES
• A clause is a group of related words
containing a subject and a verb
– An independent clause can stand on its own
• She is older than her brother.
– A dependent clause cannot stand on its own
• Since she is older than him, she can tell him what to
do.
• (Subordinating conjunction: will review later in the
slides.)
SIMPLE SENTENCES
