Many adverbs end with –ly, which is a
good clue to adverb recognition.
However, not all words that end in –ly are
adverbs.
Some words such as daily, yearly, hourly
can be either adverbs or adjectives.
Pick out the adverbs in these

Not and its contraction n’t are adverbs
They really modify the whole sentence,
but we will have them modify the verb as
it is the most important word in the
sentence.
This is common practice in grammar
books.

Compound Adverbs




Adverbs may be compound.
When they are, both adverbs modify the
same word.
Example:


He speaks rapidly and well.
In this example, both rapidly and well
modify the verb speaks.

Find the adverbs in these sentences.
We shouldn’t decide this very important decision quickly or
foolishly.

Adverbs that tell us how, when and
where can shift position in the sentence.
These adverbs modify the verb or whole
verb phrase.
Example:



I am often out of town.
Often I am out of town.
I am out of town often.
