Connecting sentences with And and But
• And: to connect two similar ideas
Ex: He didn‘t have to travel for work, and his family and friends lived
nearby.
• But: to connect two contrasting “different” ideas
Ex: She studied too hard, but she failed to pass.
• When we connect the sentences with and or but, use a comma ”,”
between the ideas
• Ex: Kasim was afraid of flying, but his fear wasn’t a big problem for
him.
• When the subject of both sentences is the same, use a pronoun
as the subject in the second sentence.
• Ex: Kasim was very nervous when he got on the plane, but he knew
he had to go.

• Let’s start with expressing ability!
• We use can and could to show that someone has (or doesn’t have)
an ability to do something.
1- We use can to express possibility or ability in the present.
2- Use Could to express possibility or ability in the past.
