The Present perfect
The Present Perfect links past events and situations with the present.
The Present perfect is used:
1 to give news of recent past events which have some relevance to the
present: Be careful! I’ve just dropped a glass on the floor.
2 to describe something that started in the past and continues to the
present: My wife and I have lived in the same house since we married.
3 to describe events which occurred at some time between the past
and present. Exactly when they happened is not known or important.
I’ve been to Russia three times before.
4 to talk about something which occurred in the past, but in a time
period which includes the present: She’s phoned twice this evening.
Transformations: Present perfect

FCE Reading
Procedures
Reading Part 2 Gapped text
FCE (7 sentences + 1 distractor)
In this part, there is an emphasis on text structure, cohesion and
coherence, and candidates’ ability to follow the development of a
long text.
Rather than concentrating on individual sentences, candidates need
to be able to follow the development of ideas, opinions and events
through the text as a whole, using their understanding of text
coherence and cohesion devices.
This task is particularly effective in helping to distinguish
between stronger and weaker candidates at FCE level.
FCE Handbook
June 2001 0101 Exam report
This gapped-sentence task, focusing on text structure, once again
turned out to be the most difficult part of the paper.
June 2003 0101 Exam report
This gapped-sentence task proved to be the hardest part on the paper.
December 2005 0100 Exam report
This gapped-sentence task, focusing on text structure, proved to be
the most challenging task on the paper.
June 2006 0101 Exam report
This gapped-paragraph task, focusing on text structure, proved to be
the most demanding task on the paper.
June 2007 0101 Exam report
It was pleasing to note that this gapped-sentence task, focusing on text
structure, was the one that candidates performed best on.
Reading Part 2 Gapped text
The main, or base, text is printed before the missing sentences.
1 Read the title and introduction, and predict the possible content of
the text.
2 Read through the base text (the main text with the gaps) and
check your predictions.
3 Try to predict the content of the missing sentences by looking
carefully at the text before and after each gap.
4 Read the missing sentences and try to decide where each one
should go. Remember, there is one extra sentence. Underline words
or phrases which show links between base text and missing
sentences.
5 Check your answers by reading the whole text again to ensure
that it makes sense. Check that the extra sentence does not fit into
any of the gaps.
FCE Writing

Checking
Planning written answers
December 2007 Exam report
Students should be encouraged to make a
plan before they start writing, and to think
carefully how to organise their ideas and
what they can say on each point.
