We can see ‘ing’ form of verbs in two sentences. They
are Present Participle
Present Participle
Formation: Present form of verb (V1) +ing
Function: Verb & Adjective
Example:
A rolling stone gathers no moss.
I saw the boys playing.
Look at the picture and sentences
The walking in the field is my uncle.
I saw a little boy taking exercise.
Uses of Present Participle
Attributive Use
The boy standing at the door is my brother.
Predicative Use
I saw the boy standing at the door.
Present Participle is used before noun or after noun.
A barking dog seldom bites.
A flying bird looks beautiful.
I saw the girl crying.
I saw the girl cooking.
Joining Sentences
I saw the boys.
They were playing.
I saw the boys playing.
People live in the village.
They are farmers.
People living in the village are farmers.
Enlargement of subject
The boy standing at the door is my brother.

Changing Sentences
Complex: I saw the boys who were playing.
Simple: I saw the boys playing.
Compound: She was singing and I heard her.
Simple: I heard her singing.

Simple: People living in the villages are farmers.
Completing Sentences
Incomplete: People ---- (live) in the village are farmers.
Complete: People living in the village are farmers.
Incomplete: A --- (fly) bird looks beautiful.
Complete: A flying bird looks beautiful.
Incomplete: We saw the ship--- (leave) the port.
Complete: We saw the ship leaving the port.
