Star Wars: The Force Awakens
target audience
By Dominic Clark
Demographic
The target audience for Star Wars: The Force Awakens are old and new fans of the
saga who want a Star Wars film just for them after the mostly disappointing
prequel trilogy. The demographic is mostly male but also female as this film has a
female lead. The main age group targeted ranges form 40-54 year olds who grew
up with the original films as this movie is a direct sequel to the previous six films.
Children are also part of the target audience as Star Wars is mostly considered as a
family picture and Disney are a very children friendly company and wouldn’t want
to loose that reputation. This is also important as it creates more fans for the
franchise which is very important to maintaining the continuation of the saga.
Target Audience Personality
According to several online polls on websites such as yougov.co.uk, the
demographic for this film describe themselves as being geeky, well educated and
unflappable as well as forgetful, proud and opinionated. They prefer American TV
to British programmes and prefer online shopping. They like other movies such as
007, X-men and the rest of the Star Wars saga as well as TV programmes such as
Game of Thrones, Robot Wars, Sherlock and Doctor Who. Their favourite music
artists include Taylor Swift, David Bowie, Elton John and The Beatles.
How the film appeals to the target audience
• Soundtrack/Music
The classic Star Wars theme composed by John Williams and
performed by the London Symphony Orchestra is instantly recognisable
and very exciting to hear in the cinema at the beginning the movie.
• Iconography
Some props such as Lightsabers, settings such as the planet Jakku and
ships/vehicles like the Millennium Falcon can be recognised as being
exclusive to the Star Wars franchise.
• Use of celebrities
Very famous celebrities such as Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark
Hamill are very appealing as this is the first time they’ve come back to
the franchise in 30 years. Also younger and newer actors such as Daisy
Ridley and John Boyega bring in new talents for the demographic to
consider watching some other films these actors have been in/going to
be in.
• Mise-en-scene
Characters such as Han Solo and Luke Skywalker are very iconic to the
franchise and attract the target audience because fans want to see how
their favourite characters story continues after the original trilogy.
