• Worshipped the 12 Olympians
• Built temples to the Gods which had human
forms and human characteristics, but they were
immortal
• These gods and goddesses lived on Mount
Olympus
• Also honored lesser gods and mythical heroes

The Search for Knowledge
• Thales: one of the first philosophers;
everything made up of water
• Democritus: everything made up of atoms
Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle
• Socrates: spoke
of goodness and
wisdom
*He challenged
beliefs and was brought
to trial where he was
accused of dishonoring
the gods and sentenced to death
• Plato: student of Socrates
*Wrote The Republic which spoke of society
• Aristotle: student of Plato
*Reason should guide pursuit of knowledge
The Parthenon
• A temple to Athena, made of marble, ivory,
and gold
• Built on the new acropolis
• The statue of Athena disappeared long
ago, but the depicted
scenes still remain

• The Greeks wrote the 1st plays
• Many of these plays were tragedies
• Euripides, Aeschylus, and Sophocles were
famous tragedy writers

• Competed with tragedies
• The comedies made fun of citizens
