Windows XP: Kernel
 Windows XP kernel is small compared to the
changes between Windows NT 4.0 and
Windows 2000, there are a number of
important changes that make Windows XP
more reliable, more scalable, and more
broadly compatible with existing
applications.
This article focuses on the kernel changes
made to achieve these improvements
Push Locks
Windows XP introduces a new locking
mechanism, called push locks, as a
synchronization mechanism for
protecting pageable data in kernel
mode.
Prefetch
Prefetching is the process of bringing
data and code pages into memory from
disk before it's demanded.
64-bit Address Space
64-bit Address Space is divided and
laid out is quite different. Where as 32bit Windows divides the address space
in half 2GB for user processes and
2GB for system space 64-bit
Registry
The Configuration Manager now maps
the Registry hives into memory much
the same way a Win32-based
application would memory map a file.
Recovery and Reliability
Windows XP builds in the System
Restore, Driver Rollback, Volume
Shadow Copy, a more reliable service
infrastructure, and new Driver Verifier
options inside.
File System
Windows XP Supported file systems
- FAT
- FAT32
- NTFS
Conclusion
 Windows XP has improvements to the
kernel components that improve
system reliability, scalability, and
performance. Windows XP offers this
operating system foundation to the PC
consumer and home user.
