• Selection and installation of network
hardware
• Interface card configuration at the
hardware level, if required
– IRQ, I/O Address and Memory Address
Network OS Installation on the
Server
• Installation of a server on the network
• Covered in this chapter
• Post-installation procedures are
required for transforming the network
into a fully functional network
Post-Installation

• Floppy disks
• Supported CD-ROMs
– SCSI
– Some IDE
• Unsupported CD-ROMs
• From a network
File System Details
• NTFS
– Windows NT file system
– Use for new NT installations and upgrades as
decided
• FAT32
– Supported in newer NT and newer Windows 9X
• FAT
– Install to maintain compatibility with DOS and
old Windows operating system

• TCP/IP
• NetBEUI
• IPX/SPX
Other Protocols
• DLC
• Point to Point Tunneling Protocol
(PPTP)
• etc.
NetBEUI
• NetBIOS extended user interface
• Standard user interface for LANs of 20
to 200 users
• Non-routeable suitable for a single type
of network
• Purpose:
– Communicate with other computers using
NetBEUI
NWLINK IPX/SPX
• For linking and inter-operability with
NetWare networks
• NetWare access supported
– Directories and files
– Printers
• Essentially a gateway service to NetWare
• Suitability
– Inter-networking with NetWare networks
