What Exactly is an
Operating System?
• A collection of programs that make
computers or computer-based devices work.
• Elements include how files and programs are
organized and stored, How memory is
accessed and used etc.
Why should we learn
about them?
• When you buy a computer you may have
options.
• This will help you make an informed choice.
• It may help you solve computer problems.
• It can help you make decisions when
upgrades are offered.
• The operating system determines what
programs will work on your computer.
There are many different
operating systems.
• A recent check showed about 100 in common
use.
• Many are ones you are likely to be familiar
with.
• Some only work on specific brands of
hardware.
• Some are no longer available, but are still
used by people who already own them.
Different Operating
Systems
• Software has to be written to run on specific
operating systems.
• For example, a program that was written for
the Macintosh will not work on Linux or
Windows.
• Playstation software won’t run on XBOX
• An exception might be programs written in
JAVA.
Cell Phones
• The Battle Between “Driod” Smartphones,
Windows Smartphones and the I-Phone is
Really All About the Operating Systems.
• This is Especially True Since Verizon Will Also Be
Offering the I-Phone.
• Also Between the I-Pad and the Zoom
Readers.
Windows
• There are many current flavors of Windows
• Even with Vista there were several varieties:

Windows for Workgroups
NT, Professional and server versions
Server Versions
• Server versions are used to store data,
supply services and control user accounts on
networks.
• Windows, Linux, and Macintosh all have
server versions.
• Some used to work with computers running
their own operating systems. Now most work
with nearly all of them.
Windows
• Not every OS succeeds
• Bill Gates sold his because another OS
manufacturer didn’t understand the market
• Even Microsoft has had it’s failures
• Windows ME
• Many would argue Vista
• Bob
Microsoft Bob
• Bob was developed in the late 80’s to early
90’s because there was a concern that
computers were too complex for most home
users.
Microsoft Bob
• Bob featured a log-in screen that allowed
individual settings for each family member.
• The dog acted as a built-in help to guide
users through the operating system.
Microsoft Bob
• The actual interface was the interior of a home.
• The user moved from room to room and clicked on
items to load programs.
• Bob was a huge failure.
• The person who headed development on Bob didn’t
fair too badly.
• It was a woman named Melinda Ann French.
• She later married and is now known as Melinda Gates.
Other Operating
Systems
• Apple Macintosh OS
•
•
•
•
Developed by Apple
Comes in both workstation and server versions
Designed to run only on Apple hardware
There were many different versions through the
years
• Identified by numbers – OS 10.5 etc.
DOS
• DOS (Disk Operating System) were early
operating systems.
• They didn’t require many resources to work.
• Microsoft had their own as did Apple and
Many other manufacturers.
• The interface (What the user saw) was a
Command Line Interface requiring the entry
of cryptic commands to launch programs and
make the computer work.
Unix
•
•
•
•
Runs on mainframes and PC’s.
Works on a variety of hardware.
There are many variations.
User interface is strictly command line.
Linux
• Developed as an alternative to Windows by
volunteers.
• Runs on several hardware platforms.
• Is called “Open Source”.
• Is distributed mostly for free.
• OS includes “Open Office” Applications.
• User usually only pays for support.
Linux
•
•
•
•
Will not run Windows programs.
Does not support all hardware.
There are many varieties.
Server versions are often used because very few
viruses have been written to attack Linux computers.
• Linux has been adapted to many devices including
HDTV’s, Cable Boxes and Cell phones.
Some Other OS’s
• Amiga
• Developed as a gaming computer in the 90’s.
• It was more advanced than both Apple and
Windows at the time and very popular.
• It was developed into a tool for video production
using an expansion called the “Video Toaster.”
• The company went broke when they developed a
gaming console that was a commercial failure.
Other OS’s
•

• Driod
The Assignment
• I want you to recommend the correct
operating system for each situation.
• Everyone does their own work.
• There may be more than one possible correct
answer.
• Any one of them will get you credit.
• You may use your notes and the Internet for
help.
