I•nterviewer: What is a white dwarf star?
Scientist: A white dwarf is the final stage of the evolution of a
star that is between .07 and 1.4 solar masses.
Interviewer: What are white dwarfs supported by?
Scientist: There supported by electron degeneracy and they are
found to the lower left of the main sequence of the H-R
diagram.
Interviewer: What do white dwarfs represent?
Scientist: They represent a stable phase in which stars of less
than 1.4 solar masses line out the rest of their lives.
Interviewer: How did the white dwarf get its name?
Scientist: They got their name because of the white color of
the first few white dwarfs discovered.
Interviewer: How are white dwarfs characterized?
Scientist: They are characterized by a low luminosity, a
mass close to that of our sun,and radius only that of the
earth.
Interviewer: What was the first white dwarf named?
Scientist: The first white dwarf found was named Sirus.
Interviewer: How do white dwarfs look?
Scientist: They look small , mostly faint and a glowing sphere
Interviewer: How do white dwarfs become white dwarfs?
Scientist: When stars don’t have enough mass if they did they
would become black holes or neutron stars.
Interviewer: What does the color of a white dwarf depend
on?
Scientist: It depends on there there temperature.
Interviewer: How much mass do white dwarfs contain?
Scientific: They contain as much mass as the sun.
Interviewer: How much volume do white dwarfs contain?
Scientist: They could contain as much as earth.
Interviewer: What is the ultimate fate for the stars like the sun?
Scientist: Upon its dead, a low mass star slowly collapse to
become a white dwarf star ~ hardly bigger than earth, a
hundred to a thousand times dimmer than our sun, and
extremely dense.
Interviewer: Describe the physical properties of white dwarf
stars- what would one look like up close?
Scientist: White dwarfs are about the size of earth or 10,000
km. In diameter, very hot and very dim.
Interviewer: What is the surface temperature of a white
dwarf?
Scientist: Its about 20,000 degrees Celsius.
Interviewer: What would happen to the white dwarf’s core?
Scientist: The core will have no further source of energy and
gradually radiate away and cool down.
