Unit 11 – Science and Humanity
Sept
Title: Find out the stages involved in the
life cycle of a star
•
Prior learning
– Our sun is a star
•
Key words
– Sun, Star, black dwarf, white dwarf, red giant, supernova, nebulae, dust,
hydrogen, helium
Unit 11 – Science and Humanity
Describe long-term changes that have occurred in our universe
to our solar system and earth
By the end of this lesson
we should be able to:
Success Criteria:
• Know the gaseous
components of the sun (C)
• I have stated that the
sun is made from
hydrogen gas
• Describe the life cycle of
a star in simple terms.(C)
• I have described in simple
terms the stages involved
in a stars life
• Explain in detail the life
cycle of a star(C/B)
• I have explained in more
detail the stages involved
in a stars life and stated
possible outcomes.
Unit 11 – Science and Humanity
Starter
• Can you name any patterns of stars
(constellations)??
Unit 11 – Science and Humanity
Unit 11 – Science and Humanity
The end of the life cycle of really massive stars is
different to that of massive stars.
After a really massive red giant collapses in a supernova
explosion, it leaves a star so dense that not even light
can escape its gravitational pull. This is called a black
hole!
Some scientists believe
that there are black
holes at the centre of
galaxies.
If light cannot escape a
black hole, then how can
a black hole be
observed?
Unit 11 – Science and Humanity
Use these words below to complete the life cycles of
different stars:

star larger
than our Sun
red giant
large

Plenary: What is the correct order for these sentences about
how a star is formed?
This causes the
‘nebula’ to collapse.
Gravity causes a dust and
gas cloud to condense
into a smaller volume.
As the nebula collapses,
temperatures and pressures
inside the nebula increase.
Birth of a star
When the temperature and
pressure are great enough
nuclear fusion starts.
Eventually gravity and
the outward pressure
of escaping energy is
balanced. At this stage,
it is called a star.
