Virtualization:
One of the lessons of RISC
• Integrated Systems Approach
– What really matters is the functioning of the complete system,
I.e. hardware, runtime system, compiler, and operating system
– In networking, this is called the “End to End argument”
– Programmers care about high-level languages, debuggers, sourcelevel object-oriented programming
• Computer architecture is not just about transistors,
individual instructions, or particular implementations
• Original RISC projects replaced complex
instructions with a compiler + simple instructions
• Logical Extension => Genetically adaptive runtime
systems enhanced by dynamic compilation running on
reconfigurable hardware? Perhaps.

• Good products created when have:

– Good ways to summarize performance
• Given sales is a function in part of performance
relative to competition, investment in improving
product as reported by performance summary
• If benchmarks/summary inadequate, then choose
between improving product for real programs vs.
improving product to get more sales;
