The role of MEMS in semiconductors is fairly well defined
Laboratory structures created at Sandia National Laboratories
The micro-machined technology is being used in accelerometers,
gyroscopes, pressure sensors, micro-mirrors, microfluidic devices,
acoustic-wave filters, MEMS oscillators, and other actuators.
MEMS semiconductor products usually contain some level of analog
circuitry (to amplify, filter, and convert measurement signals, or
physically drive microelectromechanical structures) as part of their
transducer functions.
Most devices are multi-chip products today, built with MEMS functions
on a separate die from the rest of electronics circuitry in order to
optimize manufacturing steps, simplify designs, and lower overall cost.
