Title: What is the Gender Jihad?
Amina Wadud’s book further
distinguishes her from conservative
Islamic feminist reformist writers who
have been described as attempting a
‘patriarchal bargain’ whereas Wadud
calls for the Allah (God) given rights of
Muslim women to be recognised as
equal to that of Muslim men.
Jihad = Struggle Patriarchal = Governed by men
Write down 2 ticks and a question about
Wadud.
OR
Try and explain what might be meant by
a ‘patriarchal bargain’.
What evidence can you
think of to justify the
claim there is a ‘gender
jihad’ inside Islam?
Silent Conversation
You will leave your seat with a pen. Travel
around the room looking at different pieces of
text either written by Wadud or associated with
Wadud’s book.
Write a response/question/meaning on the text.
‘If a man respected a woman as an equal human
being and not as an object of his sexual fantasies
then even a naked women would be safe from
male abuse’
A. Wadud
The events of 9/11, and the subsequent media
coverage of the events are the sole fault of men.
It is women who can end war as they are the
‘citizens of care and compassion’.
Islamic Feminist, Wadud
‘The master’s tools will not dismantle the
master’s house’
The Qur’an addressed its primary audience of
men, it allowed slavery which Muslims now
condemn; Muslims must now condemn sexism.
A. Wadud
‘To agree with the idea that men are superior
can be projected as un-Islamic’.
A. Wadud
‘Paradise lies at the foot of your Mother’.
Sunnah
Men are in charge of women by [right of] what Allah has given
one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from
their wealth. So righteous women are devoutly obedient,
guarding in [the husband's] absence what Allah would have
them guard. But those [wives] from whom you fear arrogance [first] advise them; [then if they persist], forsake them in bed;
and [finally], strike them. But if they obey you [once more], seek
no means against them. Indeed, Allah is ever Exalted and Grand.
Qur’an 4:34
‘Each measure of human understanding of the totality of the
divine nature is more like a window through which a person or a
community can have a view”
A. Wadud
“Women have rights over men similar to those
of men over women.” Quran 2:228
A woman cannot be married until she has
herself agreed to it.
Hadith of Bukhari
When a man marries he completes half his faith.
Sunnah
"Women are the twin halves of men.”
Sunnah
"O mankind! Reverence your Guardian-Lord, who created you from a single
person, created, of like nature, his mate, and from this pair scattered (like
seeds) countless men and women. Reverence Allah, through Whom you
demand your mutual (rights), and reverence the wombs (that bore you); for
Allah ever watches over you."
Noble Quran 4:1
"And among His signs is this, that He created for
you mates from among yourselves, that you may
dwell in tranquility with them, and He has put
love and mercy between your hearts.
Undoubtedly in these are signs for those who
reflect."
Quran 30:21
