The 5 Pillars of Islam
Five acts of worship that are
required of all Muslims
Statement
of faith
Daily
prayer
Donating
To charity
Fasting
Traveling
To Mecca
First Pillar- Statement of
Faith
At least once in their lives, Muslims
must state their faith by saying,
“There is no god but God, and
Muhammad is his prophet”.
Muslims say this when they accept
Islam.
They also say it in their daily prayers
Second Pillar- Daily Prayer
Muslims must pray
five times per day:





Before sunrise
Midday
Late afternoon
After sunset
Before going to bed
A call goes out from
the mosque, inviting
Muslims to come
pray.
Muslims try to pray
together at the
mosque.
Third Pillar- Donating to
Charity
Muslims make a
yearly donation to
charity
They donate part
of their wealth to a
religious official.
This money is used
to help the poor,
build mosques, or
pay debts.
Fourth Pillar- Fasting
Fasting- going without
food or drink
Muslims fast daily during
the Holy month of
Ramadan.
They do not eat or drink
anything between dawn
and sunset.
Believe fasting is a way to
show that God is more
important than one’s own
body.
Fasting is a reminder of
the people in the world
who struggle to get
enough food.

Fifth Pillar- Traveling to
Mecca
Hajj- pilgrimage to
Mecca.
All Muslims must
travel to Mecca at
least once in their
lives.
The Kaaba,
located in Mecca,
is Islam’s most
sacred place.
