Beginning of Time!

Introduction
The Air and Space Museum is putting together a new
display about the origin and evolution of the universe. This
is part of an ongoing project to capture students interest in
science. They have asked local area high school students
to participate by creating a presentation that will educate
visitors about Cosmology and the origin of stars and stellar
systems. There will be 10 projects chosen and they will be
displayed throughout the upcoming year at the Smithsonian
Air and Space Museum for all to see.

The Task
Because this is such a big opportunity, you will be working
in pairs to gather as much information as possible about
the origin and evolution of the universe. You and your
partner will then create a presentation that will be
presented to the Air and Space Museum for their
consideration.

The Process
You and your partner will need to research the following
concepts and include them in your project: Your
presentation should include at least 13-15 slides.
I. Your teacher will divide you into pairs.
II. You and your partner will be responsible for going on a
"research" expedition. There are several concepts to be
researched and presented, so it will be best if you divide
the tasks equally.

Presentation Must Include:
1. The Big Bang Theory:
a. What is it?
b. What facts do scientists use to explain the creation of the universe?
c. According to scientists, how old is the universe?
2. Nebulae:
a. What are they and how are they formed?
b. What significance does this have on the universe?
3. Stellar evolution:
a. How are stars created?
b. What is the life cycle of a star?
c. What are the determining factors that causes a star to die?
4. Galaxies:
a. What has happened/is happening to our galaxy as time passes?
b. What evidence allows scientists to make this statement?
c. Do other galaxies exist? If so, why do scientists believe this?
5. Cosmology:
a. What is it?
b. Include any interesting facts (Asteroids, comets, planets, exploration, future expectation.)

III. Each individual should find as much information about their assigned
topic as they can. Then together, you need to discuss all of your findings
and decide what is most relevant for your presentation.
IV. Using Microsoft PowerPoint, prepare a presentation. Remember that
PowerPoint presentations are not for relaying notes to your audience. Be
brief and have the knowledge to talk about each of your slides.
V. Be creative but don't forget who your audience will be. Scientists from
the Air and Space Museum will be assessing your overall project and
making the decision on the top 10 for display.
