WE WELCOME YOU
TO THE STUDY ON
BUDDHISM
REFLECTION
HOW
MUCH DO YOU
REMEMBER
PART
EIGHT
WOMEN:
Buddha demonstrated a strong
suspicion of women and
denounce the sensual attraction
which women exercise on man.
He continually warned his
disciplines about the sinister
guile of women.
When
asked how men should
behave toward women he said
– not see them. If have to see
them? Not speak to them. If
have to speak to them. Keep
your thoughts tightly
controlled.
Women accepted in the
Sanga had numerous
restrictions. They were
subjected to the authority of
a monk in all circumstances.
If 100 years old, she must
reverence a monk. -
Rise
on meeting him, salute
with clasped hand and honour
him with rather respect
although he was received in
the order that day. If women
had not been received into the
order the doctrine would have
stayed for a 1000 years, but
since accepted, it will last 500.
He
distrusted women
and that only after delay
and misgivings he
admitted them into the
order. He declared that
they be subjugated to the
lowest level of the Sanga.

YOUR
QUESTIONS
WHAT IS
BUDDHISM
ALL ABOUT?
Buddhism
is that religion
and philosophy that has
Buddha as its central focus;
that concentrates on how to
dispel suffering.
Its tenets include The
Dharma, The Sangha,
Karma, Samsara and
Nirvana.
IS BUDDHISM
A CULT?
Yes,
based on the following
definition.
The word cult in current
popular usage usually
refers to a new religious
movement or other group
whose beliefs or practices
are considered abnormal or
bizarre.
DOES THE
BUDDHA HAVE
CHILDREN? IF SO
WHAT ARE THEIR
NAMES?
No.
He had a child.
Just before Prince Siddhartha
renounced the world, his wife
Yasodhara gave birth to a son.
When the birth was announced
to the prince, he said, "A fetter
has been born, a bondage has
been born," and so he named
him Rahula.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN
BY THE MONKS ARE
FORBIDDEN TO DRINK
INTOXICATING
LIQUOR?
The
Monks were not
allowed to drink any
beverage that would
cause drunkenness.
(like alcohol)
ARE THE MONKS
BUDDHISTS?
Yes
Monk
is a person who practices
religious asceticism, living either alone
or with any number of other monks. A
monk may be a person who decided to
dedicate his life to serve the other living
beings or to be an ascetic who
voluntarily chooses to leave mainstream
society and live his life in prayer and
contemplation. The concept is ancient
and can be seen in many religions and
in philosophy.
WHY
WHEN ONE
MARRIES A BUDDHIST
ONE CAN’T LEAVE; BUT
HAS TO HIDE?
Of course you can leave
because a man and a woman
must have the liberty to
separate if they really cannot
agree with each other.
Separation is preferable to
avoid miserable family life for
a long period of time.
DO BUDDHISTS READ
THE BIBLE?
Buddhists
may read the Bible
and other religious and
philosophical books in order to
understand other religions. It
is, however, no different from
reading any other book of
philosophy. They do not see it
as "the truth" or an authority
on how one must live.
DO BUDDHISTS PAY
TITHES?
No! Buddhists are not compelled to
offer any amount of money or help in
other ways. All contributions
towards the temple are voluntary. If
there are special needs such as
capital expenditure for construction
and other maintenance work, then
the devotees provide them
voluntarily. The existence of the
temple is met exclusively by

DO BUDDHISTS
BELIEVE IN BLOOD
TRANSFUSION?
The
approach to blood transfusion
varies depending on the tradition of
Buddhism that is being followed.
Some will be happy to accept the
procedure, seeing it as an act of
kindness. Others may be concerned
about the spiritual consequences of
accepting blood from an unknown
source and may first wish to have
spiritual guidance.
ARE MONKS MARTIAL
ARTS (KARATE, KUNG FU)
EXPERTS?
In
the history of China there was
much lawlessness, so temples
were vulnerable to attack, as
were monks who travelled the
country teaching the ways of
Buddhism. To protect
themselves, the monks developed
a system of fighting.
(They are very gentle and good
natured)
HOW DANGEROUS IS THE
PRACTICE OF YOGA,
MEDITATION AND CHANTING
TO OUR
CHRISTIAN LIFE?
YOGA
There are different types of yoga,
but what they all have in common is
they are a way to earn
salvation. There are several
practices within Yoga. These
include, but are not limited to
meditation, repeating the divine
name, breathing exercises,
performing acrobatic exercises,
trying to put one’s own body in
difficult postures.
YOGA CONT’D
Meditation is central to all forms
of Yoga. Meditation helps its
practitioners to be able to find
release from the endless cycle of
birth, death and rebirth. “Yoga is
a method of spiritual training
whose purpose is to integrate or
unite the self.
SHOULD
CHRISTIANS
PRACTICE YOGA?
It
is not recommended
that Christians practice
yoga since the intention
of yoga is a path in
order to attain
salvation.
A
major part of yoga is
stretching. There is nothing wrong
with stretching at all. In fact
stretching is a very useful exercise
to help people stay healthy. So if
one is just purely stretching and is
not practicing the philosophical and
religious nature of yoga, then feel
free to participate.
WHAT ARE THE
ESSENTIAL
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN
BUDDHISM AND
CHRISTIANITY?
The Godhead
Buddhism does not entail
the Godhead.
Christianity : The Triune
God is lauded . (God the
Father , God the Son, and
God the Holy Spirit.)
1.
2.
Redemption (Soul, Sin,
Salvation)
 Buddhism : According to the
Buddhist’s concept, one has to work
for one's own salvation, and
therefore, cannot blame or depend
on others for salvation.
 Christianity : Salvation is not
based on one's work, but instead, is
a free gift to all those who accept
Jesus Christ as their Saviour.
3.
Eternal Life
 Buddhism : According to the
Buddhist’s doctrine, there is an
eternal life, which depends on
the karma of one's present life.
 Christianity : There is an
eternal life in Heaven, which
has nothing to do with karma
and comes as a free gift of
4.
Love And Compassion
 Buddhism : The concept of
Buddhism does not mention a
God who showers love and
takes care of His people.
 Christianity : The Bible, the
holy book of the Christians,
mentions God's love for His
devotees.
5.
The Concept of World
 Buddhism : Buddhism neither
deals with the beginning nor a
definite end of the world.
 Christianity : According to the
Christian doctrine, God created
the world from nothing, and
rules it according to His own
definite plan.
6.
Spiritual Texts
 Buddhism : The Buddhist’s canons
include only those insights which the
Buddha won by His own strength and
will after comprehending the nature of
truth. It was compiled four hundred year
after his death.
 Christianity : The Bible, holy text for
the Christians, is regarded as the 'Word
of God' and includes those realities,
which are unknown to mankind. It has
prophecies about Christ which were

CONCLUSION OF THE WHOLE MATTER
Buddhism offers many wonderful
things but it does not offer
eternal life with a personal God
who has made us as we are,
physically and spiritually…
JUST FOR HIS OWN
PURPOSE!!!
Conclusion Of The Whole
Matter (Cont’d)
The author of Beyond Buddhism
states: “While visiting the
gorgeous shrines and elaborate
temples ... I could not help but
feel that something was lacking
in these holy places of
worship...The high ethical
morality, the symbol of
compassion and mercy...
Conclusion of the whole
matter (Cont’d)
Endeavour of human projects to
elevate humanity to the state of
divine purity...could never
satisfy the yearning of my
soul to know the one true
Creator...”
It
is said that the Buddha told
Christ to suffer to be
enlightened but Jesus told him
no. When Christ told the
Buddha to suffer to redeem His
(Jesus’) flock, the Buddha’s
response was that, it was too
much of a task!!
The
recording of St John speaks
clearly that God gave His Son so
that any, and everyone who
believes, may have eternal life,
through Him!!! (3:16)
Even The Buddhists!!!!!
