Why is he important?
King Ashoka’s adulthood consisted of conquering
many kingdoms and then unified them into one
united kingdom. His father had created the Mauryan
Empire and used violence to keep his subjects in line.
He also made a strong central government and was the
first one to unite India into one powerful nation.
Legend then says that Ashoka, who was now king,
looked out over an extremely bloody battle filled with
death, it then says that he decided to follow the
Buddhist religion and to become much less violent.
Buddhist Values, General Welfare, Justice, and Security
Ashoka wanted all of his citizens to follow the
Buddhist religion with him. He engraved things
everywhere about following Buddhist values. He
wanted people to be loving and respectful. He also
wanted people to act morally and not get attached to
any worldly possessions.
These were rules were made to make sure that people
had good health and shelter. It also made sure that
people had clean water and enough food. This allowed
his citizens to be able to survive even if they were poor.
This showed he really cared for his kingdom’s people.
This value was made to make sure people always had
fair laws. It also spoke about how people were to be
treated in jail. It made sure that laws were followed
and people had the chance to be proven innocent.
One of the edicts states that “officers shall not handle
problems with violence or torture without good
reason.” This shows that he wanted people’s lives to be
fair.
These were about enemies and non-citizens. They
helped make peace and helped people be safe. He
tried not to have enemies and get others to trust him
and hope that they are happy in their dealings with
him.
