MEMORY MANIPULATION
By Jenny &Huibin
Purpose

In 1974 researchers designed an experiment to test
the reliability of memory, and whether it could be
manipulated after the fact.
Elizabeth F. Loftus
Elizabeth’s Experience


At a family reunion, an uncle told her that at age
14 she found her mother’s drowned body.
Experienced the reality of sexual abuse at 6 years
old.
Procedure



Loftus and her student Jacqueline Pickrell
performed an experiment in which they gave
participants four short narratives describing
childhood events, all supposedly provided by family
members, and asked them to try to recall them.
The lost in the mall experiment has been replicated
and extended with different ages of subjects.

Discovery

Some conclusions drawn based on the lost in the
mall technique (specifically that leading questions
can create false memories of child sexual abuse)
have been criticized.
Change

Her pilot study of the lost in the mall technique has
been criticized for the ethics used in acquiring
subjects and for being used to draw inappropriate
conclusions about false memories and therapeutic
techniques.
