THE EARTH
The earth rotates on its axis from west to east, causing places in the east to see
the sun first.
Plate Tectonics
HOW PLATES MOVE
Convergence Zone
Plates move towards each other in a zone of convergence resulting in
fold mountains or subduction zones.
DIVERGENCE ZONE
Plates move away from each other in a zone of divergence resulting in
deep sea trenches and rift valleys
Transform or neutral Plates
Plates move past each other, grating, grinding and breaking apart resulting in features
such as transform faults
CONTINENTAL DRIFT
200 million years ago the earth was divided into 1 mass of land called pangea
and 1 body of water called panthalassa. Over time pangea started to break up
and drift apart, resulting in a process known as continental drift
SUBDUCTION ZONE
Ocean Floor
When plates move, there are a few things that occur along the ocean floor.
Divergence causes sea floor spreading and convergence results in ridges
THE EARTH’S PLATES
The earth is divided into tectonic plates. There are 7 major plates and 7 minor plates.
The Indian and Austrailian plates make up the Indo-austrailian plate. The plates are
further grouped according to their crust as oceanic or continental.
