Introduction
to
Geology!
What is Geology?
Geology = The study of the earth’s
surface and interior
Geologists are people who
study the Earth’s
surface and interior!
What do you think is inside the Earth?
Gold?
Mole People?
Gremlins?
Monsters?
People actually used
to believe this!
How do you think Geologists
can find out what is really inside Earth?
They drill and dig to the inside!
However, we have only been able to
drill to about 25 km. deep!
So to help us see
even deeper, we
looked for natural
breaks into the Earth...
Cracks from Volcanoes and Earthquakes!
These geological events can bring up
material from inside the earth!
We can also use the vibrations felt from
earthquakes to determine what is deep
inside the Earth.
Based on how the
vibrations travel,
we found that
there are
5 main layers
inside the Earth!
5 main layers of the Earth:
INNER CORE A sphere of hot, solid
metal (iron, nickel) under high pressure
and heat. 1200 km thick, 7200° C
OUTER CORE Hot, liquid metal
(iron and nickel). 2,250 km. thick, 5000° C
MANTLE Hot magma, but mostly solid.
Slowly moves (like GLASS)
2900 km. thick. 2000-4000° C
LITHOSPHERE 100 km. thick. Outermost section,
contains the outer part of the mantle, plus the:
CRUST Outermost layer, made of rock.
5-40 km thick. 0-870° C
Can you think of other things that
have layers like the Earth?
Eggs: shell, membrane, whites, yolk
Peanuts: shell, skin, meat
Cherries: skin, flesh, pit
Reese’s Pieces: color, chocolate,
peanut butter
