Date: 09/04/2012
Objective:
• Students will be able to discuss
and describe the 5 branches of
Earth Science.
Word of the Day:
• Earth System:
– Any of the one of the fields of study
included in the 5 branches of Earth
Science.
Chapter 1.1 Earth Science
Earth Science involves 5 areas of study (5
specialties):
1. Astronomy - The study of objects beyond
Earth’s atmosphere (galaxies, stars, planets.)
2. Meteorology - The study of the forces that
cause atmosphere to change and to produce
weather.
3. Geology - The study of rocks and Earth’s
physical history.
4. Oceanography - The study of Earth’s oceans.
5. Environmental Science - The study of the
interactions of organisms and their
surroundings.

Earth’s Systems
There are 4 Earth Systems and they interact
with each other.
1. Geosphere - Area of the surface of Earth
down to its core (involves Geology.)
2. Atmosphere - Protective blanket of gasses
that surrounds the earth.
3. Hydrosphere - All water on Earth and in the
atmosphere.
4. Biosphere - All organisms on Earth as well as
the environments in which they live.

Geosphere
There are 3 main parts of
the Geosphere:
1. Crust - Thin, cool
outermost layer
a)
Comes in two kinds:
Continental (Land)
Oceanic (Ocean)
2.
3.
Mantle - Hot, molten
(almost melted)
second layer. Ranges
from 100˚C to
4000˚C.
Core - Very hot solid
center of Earth, made
up of iron and nickel.

Atmosphere
Earth’s atmosphere protects the planet from
harmful radiation and other stuff from space.
• It is made up of mixed gasses:
• 78% Nitrogen
• 21% Oxygen
• 1% mixed gasses

Hydrosphere
• 97% is saltwater
• 3% is freshwater
Biosphere
•
All living things!
“Technology” - Refers to the application of scientific
discoveries
