Additional Information
Streptococcus
Illness caused by strep includes strep throat, strep pneumonia, scarlet fever, rheumatic fever
(and rheumatic heart valve damage), glomerulonephritis, the skin disorder erysipelas, and
PANDAS.
Staphylococcus
The best known member of the Staphylococcus family is Staphylococcus aureus.
Staphylococcus are the main culprit in hospital-acquired infections, and cause thousands of
deaths every year.
Hepatitis A Virus
Inflammation is the painful, red swelling that results when tissues of the body become injured
or infected. Inflammation can cause organs to not work properly.
Sexually Transmitted Diseases
Because the genital areas provide a moist, warm environment that is especially conducive to
the proliferation of bacteria, viruses, and yeasts, a great many diseases can be transmitted this
way. They include AIDS, Chlamydia, genital herpes, genital warts, gonorrhea, syphilis, yeast
infections, and some forms of hepatitis.
E. coli
Most strains of E coli are quite harmless. However, some strains of E. coli are capable of
causing disease, sometimes disease of deadly proportions.
Common Cold Virus
More than 200 different types of viruses are known to cause the common cold. Because so
many different viruses can cause a cold and because new cold viruses constantly develop, the
body never builds up resistance against all of them.
Shigellosis
Shigellosis causes intestinal pain and diarrhea with mucus and blood in the stool. It is especially
common in tropical countries, but frequently occurs elsewhere. It is a particular hazard for
people with AIDS or other immunodeficiency states.
