Ethnobotany: Plants in our World
COMMON NAME OF PLANT
Genus species
Use this area to briefly introduce your plant. Feel free to discuss its history, notoriety,
value, taste, or any notable characteristic. You MUST indicate its plant family by its
scientific name, and may include the common. For example: This plant is in the
Malvaceae, or Cotton Family.
Whatever: Create a new header,
and add information about the plant,
its unusual morphology, or its
location, illegal trade, side effects or
whatever will provide interest and
information about the species. This
text is in at 20 font, but you may go
as low as 14 font (see photo credit
below) if you need to squeeze in
more information.
Where found:
use this space to indicate countries or
regions of the world where the plant grows naturally. Move the red
star to any location and/or enlarge it. You can use different color of
stars to indicate where it is native versus where it is now grown or
other variations. Map from www.coloradoacademy.com.
Uses: Use this or additional textboxes to discuss
how the plant or its extracts are used. AVOID
MAKING DIRECT MEDICAL CLAIMS. Do not
state that this plant cures cancer or provides
access to a spiritual world. You may state that a
specific culture or other source believes or has
reported that this plant has certain effects. You can
use the phrase “Putative claims include…..” and
use information from the internet, or other gray
literature. Even if you get information from a
reputable website (like the NIH) it may not mean
that there is verifiable scientific evidence of some
curative power. You can freely say (if there is
evidence) that a plant compound is associated with
lowered heart rate or feelings of euphoria; or that
Harvard is investigating its effects on cancer.
Two or three photos will greatly
enhance your poster. You can show
the whole plant, or chemical formula,
or show someone using it. You must
provide at least a partial citation for
any photo credit such as  Photo
