disease in which a person is
unable to defend his/her body

• HIV-infected people don’t
develop AIDS symptoms until
years after infection
• HIV-infected individuals can feel
healthy yet still spread virus to
others

How is HIV Spread?
• Body fluids (semen, vaginal
fluid) through sexual contact
• Blood (sharing of needles)
• Transmitted to infants during
pregnancy or through breast
milk

How HIV Defeats Immune System
• In healthy people, immune
system attacks & destroys
invaders (bacteria, virus-infected
cell, cancer)
• In AIDS patients, immune system
is infected & destroyed by HIV
• Body is unable to defend itself
• AIDS patients usually die of
infections that a healthy person
would normally resist
