1. How can you make sure that a plant or
animal is the plant or animal you think it is?
2. Have you ever read a “choose your own
adventure” book?
Ecologists use dichotomous keys to identify organisms.
There are a series of questions that give TWO choices to
slowly narrow down the identification of the organism.
We will use this in the next two days
1. The organism has legs
a. Yes, a human
b. No, a plant

2. The organism is in uniform

Ecological Sample for LSE
Our goal over the next few weeks is to complete
an ecological community assessment of the LSE
campus.
What we will sample:

Insects
Trees
Birds
Mammals
Bacteria (yes,
bacteria…assuming Ms.
Leigh can get the supplies)
We take samples to make
inferences about populations
• There is no possible way to sample every
single organism at LSE
• So we sample and draw conclusions from the
sample we will collect
• All the 7th grade classes will combine their
data for analysis (to be posted on
msleighscience.weebly.com)
Why start with insects?
• They are the most AWESOME
• Insects are diverse and easily sampled
Study Question:
• What organisms exist in the LSE ecological
community?
• How do these organisms interact?
Methods:
• 7th grade science students will sample insects,
birds, plants, mammals, and bacteria
• All 7th grade students will pool their data
Methods for insect sampling
• There exist 2 kinds of insects:
• Flying
• Not flying
• We are going to sample the non-flying insects
We take samples to make

populations, we can ask questions
about communities
Insect sampling with Pit Traps
• Students will place cups in the LSE field 25
feet apart.
• Cups will be filled with soapy water
• Insects will be collected and identified in the
next 24 hours
