Roles of Living Organisms
What is Composting?
• Composting is a
process that
turns “garbage”
into usable soillike material.
How Does It Work?
• Tiny living things called microorganisms
do most of the work.
-Fungi and bacteria are microorganisms.
• They break down organic materials.
What Can Be Composted?
• Items you normally throw into your
garbage can be composted.
• Things such as:
– leaves
– grass clippings
– fruits
– veggies
CAN BE COMPOSTED!
What Else Can Be Composted?
• Coffee grounds
and filters
• Tea bags
Why Should We Compost?
• Yard waste and food scraps make up 20%
to 30% of garbage!!!
• Landfills are filling up quickly.
• By adding compost to your soil, you help
the earth!
Where Do We Start?
• Tell your parents about our composting
project.
• In a reusable container, bring in kitchen
and small yard items to compost.
• We will combine our items in the
composting bin with other students’ items
and turn the bins daily.
In a Few Weeks…
We will have compost!!!
Yay!
